CHARLOTTE (AP) – A husband and wife are wanted in connection with a home improvement program that scammed elderly customers with $ 2 million, the FBI said Friday.
Jorge Alberto Garcia and Helen Smith-Flores are being charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in connection with a program that defrauded at least 50 elderly victims, according to a press release from the agency’s Charlotte office. The FBI said Garcia and Smith-Flores ran a home improvement store in Durham, Orange and Chatham counties between December 2014 and last month.
The FBI said Garcia had reached out to elderly and retired victims in their dormitories and offered his home improvement services to people, most of whom have steady incomes and who may have had significant health problems. The couple took heavy payments for construction work and never did it.
The victims are asked to report.
