The Boldest Bestselling Paint Colors of 2022

Every major paint brand might have chosen green for 2022 latest Color of the Year—but plenty of louder hues are giving the soothing and tranquil shade a run for its money. Pale pastels and serene earthy shades seem to get all the attention these days, but if you’re looking for less timid, more striking and even exciting shade for your walls, we have good news: Some of the bestselling paints from the biggest names are BOLD, and we’ve rounded them up here to inspire you. (Need help pinpointing which hue is best for your space? We’ve got you covered. But first, click here for everything you need to know before you paint a room!)

From Glidden to Benjamin Moore, these are the most vivid colors currently flying off the shelves:

Farrow & Ball

Hague Blue has the happy balance of being bold and dark where needed,” says Patrick O’Donnell, Farrow & Ball’s International Brand Ambassador. “Due to the underlying green pigment that runs through the color, it never feels too cool,” he points out. “In a higher sheen finish like Modern Eggshell, those green notes really resonate and give an almost petrol-like quality to the color, making it feel vibrant and alive.”

The British brand is also seeing a surge in demand for rich ocher shades, “like our very own India Yellow,” O’Donnell reveals.

“It brings drama and warmth, and is perfect for a north-facing room. It’s such a good yellow as it has none of the acidity you get from brighter, bluer-based yellows.”

Sherwin-Williams

“Pink has always been a popular color, and we’ve seen certain variations of it rise in popularity over the past few years,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

In the Pink brings a vibrant and cheerful energy to any space—whether it be on the walls of a nursery or on a piece of furniture as an accent. Consumers gravitate toward it [due to its versatility]—it can be used as a neutral backdrop to décor, a statement wall, or a piece of furniture.”

“While incorporating neutral elements into the home will likely be here to stay in 2022, we are also seeing others gravitate toward warmer, deeper colors such as Red Gumball,” says Glidden associate marketing manager Ashley McCollum. The punchy crimson—described as “a dark yet bright coral red with a raspberry undertone”—goes well with tones of deep charcoals or touches of rich golds and hunter greens,” she notes.

Ancient Copper—“a warm cinnamon” color that summons to mind pumpkin spice lattes—is also a perennial crowd pleaser.

The hue is “perfect for a space that you want to feel homey and comfortable, like a dining or living room,” McCollum advises. “It works well with other earthy tones, specifically greens and yellows.”

Benjamin Moore

Ever since Benjamin Moore named Aegean Teal its 2021 Color of the Year, demand for the striking shade has soared.

“We selected Aegean Teal for its balancing, soothing qualities and saw a really great response to it,” says Arianna Cesa, associate manager of color marketing and development at Benjamin Moore, who notes that the color grew more than 2000% in sales in the past year. “One of our favorite places to use it is on kitchen cabinets, which is a great canvas for experimenting with bolder hues.”

Another perennial hit? Hal Navy—”a use-anywhere shade with a classic maritime feel.”

Annie Sloan

Napoleonic Blue—a deep blue “inspired by the ultramarine and cobalt pigments used for decorative work in everything from neoclassical interiors to modern 20th century decoration”—is popular among Annie Sloan’s customers, the color maven reveals.
