Roofers will remain the largest residential wood panel market through 2024

CLEVELAND, January 4, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Roofing accounted for nearly a third of the demand for wood paneling for residential buildings in 2019 and is expected to remain the leading application through 2024, according to a new analysis by the Freedonia Group:

  • An increase in roof renovation projects both to repair damaged roofs and to reinforce existing roofs will support the increase in demand.

  • Most of the use of wood panels in roofing applications is created by the requirements for roof cladding and decks, although some demand is also emerging from their use in roof frame and roof cladding products.

OSB is the dominant wood panel product for residential roofs and is expected to increase its market share through 2024 at the expense of softwood plywood due to its superior durability and lower cost.

Increasing use of OSB to increase the demand for wood panels in living areas

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is the premier residential wood panel product as it is used in a number of structurally important applications including subfloors, roofs, wall cladding and siding. OSB is expected to be used in many of these applications because of its:

  • high strength

  • durability

  • limited board imperfections

  • Impact and fire resistance

  • good thermal and acoustic properties
