Precision Garage Door is the Top Small Tampa Bay Workplace of 2021

CLEARWATER – Michele Ferris knew she was working for the right company after Hurricane Irma.

Precision Tampa Bay garage door had heard of a woman whose home was damaged in the storm. Her husband had recently died of cancer and she had undergone a kidney transplant. Although her door “basically fell off her house,” she couldn’t take care of it. Precision helped her get a new door for free through her community outreach program.

“To see how that happened, just know you are in the right place,” said Michele Ferris, garage door sales director.

Precision was # 1 small business in this year’s Top Workplaces franchise, rising from # 21 just three years ago.

Founded in 2007, the repair company helps customers improve what it calls “America’s New Front Door”. The Clearwater-based company has eight locations in the Tampa Bay area and employs 83 people. Precision also received the special “Doers” award for companies that “act efficiently and well”.

The company’s ethos, according to the Top Workplaces survey, is to serve the community. That means taking care of the employees so that they can take care of the customers.

“They’re always looking for ways to make our job better and easier,” said Ferris.

Ferris joined the company six years ago after retiring from a 22-year career as a company. She wanted to move on to something less stressful, and her husband, who works in garage door manufacturing, said he had heard good things about Precision’s culture.

What the company’s employees really enjoy about their work is the way management treats them.

“I look forward to waking up and going to work every morning. Precision executives have created an amazing culture and environment in which I can come to work and enjoy my daily life with them, ”said one employee.

Another said the owners and managers “go beyond what any employer would ever do to ensure their employees feel valued and cared for.”

Part of this attitude is reflected in small gestures for the employees. During the summer, Precision has fans to help out in Florida’s stifling heat. On sunny days, they hand out umbrellas so that the staff and the homeowner have shade to stand when discussing the job. And now the company has a motorized showroom where homeowners can see the garage doors up close before buying.

“If they get a good feel for which door to install, they’ll be happier,” said Ferris.

The company also has competitive advantages. Precision offers full health, dental, disability, and vision insurance, as well as a retirement account for full-time employees. It contributes to flexible spending accounts for its employees.

One of the attractions for the employees is the company’s involvement in the community. Precision has an “Opening Doors” program that distributes garage doors to those in need, such as the door for the woman whose home was damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Her recipients included former firefighters, veterans, and paramedics.

Business has also picked up during the pandemic as those who can work from home spend more time taking stock of their surroundings. Despite the boom in business, the speed at which new orders are filled has not been significantly delayed.

“We live here, we work here. We want to do better, ”said Ferris. “You lose that when you work for a really big company.”
