Ohio Attorney General is suing contractors in central Ohio for alleged abandoning home projects news

COLUMBUS – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is seeking reimbursements of over $ 146,000 from two central Ohio contractors accused of skipping home improvement projects, including some in Richland County.

“This couple left projects without giving an explanation – that’s because there is no excuse for this rip-off,” said Yost. “Now you have to answer the judge.”

According to the lawsuit, Scott and Camie Reed allegedly failed to provide promised services or refunds after accepting deposits from customers. The Reeds of Stoutsville has done business under the names Capital City Custom Home Improvement LLC and C&S Design Group.

Five complaints filed with Yost’s consumer protection department hold the Reeds responsible for losses totaling more than $ 146,000.

Three of the complaints state that the reeds never completed any work, while the other two complaints describe their work as poor and incomplete. Consumers are from Franklin, Richland, Ross, and Union counties.

The lawsuit filed in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas calls for an order requiring the Reeds to reimburse affected customers and pay civil penalties. She is also seeking an injunction asking them to stop violating the state’s consumer protection laws.

Yost reminded consumers to take the following steps before signing a home improvement service contract:

– Check the Ohio Attorney General’s office and the Better Business Bureau for complaints against the contractor.

– Make sure your contract includes a notice of your right to cancel a door-to-door sale. As a rule, contractors can only start work after the three-day reflection period has expired.

– Get written estimates from multiple contractors before making a final decision.

– Make sure the written contract includes all verbal commitments, start and end dates, and a detailed list of all material costs, labor and services.

– Be careful if the contract requires a large down payment or if you have to write a check directly to the contractor instead of their company.

– Contact the Ohio Secretary of State to confirm the company is properly registered.
