“Meth House Makeover”? The programming pivot proposed by HGTV gets us talking

“House Party” is the official podcast from realtor.com® about the overlapping worlds of real estate and pop culture Natalie Way and Rachel Stults. Click the player above for our thoughts on this week’s hot topics.

For nearly three decades, HGTV has been producing carefree, healthy content that feels like a warm hug when consumed. The home renovation TV shows – especially those of the past 10 years – have provided an easy viewing experience for those of us looking for a calming, formulaic, low stakes viewing experience.

However, a story recently published in the New Yorker suggested that things might change at HGTV: the content might get more nervous. With potential new shows with working titles like “Meth-House Makeover,” “Nightmare Neighbors 911,” and “The World’s Weirdest Realtors,” the executives at Discovery (HGTV’s parent company) seem to be thinking outside the box – and we’re total on board.

In this episode of House Party, we break that story down and give our honest, unfiltered opinions. Are we for HGTV getting a little weird? Hit “Play” above to find out!

We’re also crowning this week’s celebrity real estate winner and loser. Our winner, an NBA star and an exotic fish lover, got away with quite a deal at his Las Vegas mansion. And despite the drop in the price of her southern California mansion, our loser (a heiress to a fast food restaurant) won’t be turning burgers anytime soon.
