Four Seasons Plumbing gives 7 simple tips to prepare your house plumbing for winter

Rose shared these tips to help prepare home plumbing for winter:

  1. Inspect pipes. Perform a visual inspection of the inner and outer tubes. Leaks can become major problems when water freezes. Pipes expand and can potentially burst.
  2. Lean towards external faucets. Remove all hoses from the outer taps. Close the shut-off valves on your faucets and drain any excess water. Use insulated faucet covers for extra frost protection.
  3. Isolate areas near pipes. Use expandable foam or sealant to fill in any cracks or holes that let cold air in. If there are pipes in the garage, insulate the gate.
  4. Consider heating cables. Pipes found in garages, attics, crawl spaces, or unheated basements may need additional protection. Consider using self-regulating heating cables that will heat pipes once the temperature reaches a certain point. Add pipe insulation to contain the heat.
  5. Check the outside drains. Make sure the outside drains are working properly and are not clogged. Standing water can freeze and clog the drainage system.
  6. Prepare the kettle. To avoid repairs in winter, prepare the water heater now. Insulate the tank and pipes to ensure that the heat is retained. Check the anode rod and temperature pressure regulator to make sure they are in good condition. Adjust the temperature to save energy costs. Check for deposits in the tank. It may have to be drained.
  7. Expect freezes. Make sure the space heaters are easily accessible. They can help thaw pipes or prevent them from freezing if the temperature drops sharply. Plan to open the sink cabinet doors to let in heat and plan to allow water to move by dripping the faucets.

“It’s important to keep track of potential plumbing issues, especially as the seasons change,” said Rose. “Winter weather can be unpredictable, so now is the time to carry out checks and keep everything in place so it freezes.”

Homeowners should consider contacting a licensed plumber if major problems arise during winter prep. A trained professional can assess the situation and come up with a plan of action that best suits their plumbing needs long before freezing occurs.
