Enjoy the natural splendor of a stag running against a garage door

With the arrival of spring, the world begins to wake up again. Flowers bloom, birds chirp and deer tear their asses into driveways to slam headlong into garage doors.

That final, miraculous display of general optimism and joy of the season was recorded on video via YouTube channel ssnapier With such stunning footage, we can almost hear David Attenborough’s narration as it plays. For a few seconds we only see a driveway and movement on the sun-bleached section of road at the edge of the camera frame. Then a deer comes into view to throw itself into the garage door as hard as possible. The natural majesty of the herd animal comes into its own as it slams the door with a distorted crack just before a few more deer follow, slide on the sidewalk, tip over each other and then return to Who-Know-Where, their destination complete .

There is silence for a moment before a man’s voice can be heard from inside the house yelling at a dog to calm down and then exclaiming, “What the hell?” With perfect comedic timing.

Obviously he is overwhelmed by the beauty of what he has just witnessed: a ballet that was choreographed by nature and performed with mysterious grace by the beautiful children of planet earth.

Some people in the comments on the video suggest that the deer couldn’t see where they were going because the sun was too bright and the garage door was painted brightly. This seems very possible, but we also know that taking the unpredictable art of nature on its own terms is just as important as trying to explain it with scientific reasoning. What is the weight of describing a rainbow besides seeing one with your own eyes? Does knowing the evolutionary reasons for a cardinal’s bright red feathers help the bird look more stunning? No. And the same is true of this other remarkable portrayal of an animal’s spectacular, soul-energizing urge to bump into a stationary object at full speed.
