With temperatures finally feeling like winter in West Alabama, now is a good time to check your home’s HVAC system.
When things don’t work right, you may be paying more to heat your home.
WVUA 23 News visited Jolly Heating and Air Conditioning this week to learn more about what you can do to make sure your heating system is performing at its best.
HVAC technician Ethan Gowan said there are some common mistakes people make.
The most common? Leave your filters in for too long before changing them.
“It is a terrible thing for the system to leave in several months and let it build up and dirty,” said Gowan. “It’s pretty choking on it.”
Another thing to avoid is running your HVAC at too high or too low a temperature.
“If you really boot it up now, the system will keep you running all the time,” he said. “That can be a real burden.”
The ideal temperature for keeping your HVAC system at its best is between 70 and 72 degrees, Gowan said. If you’re still too cold, pack up or use a space heater for the room you inhabit most often.
