Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I love that phrase. And it seems apt for the Eagles fans who decided to climb on top of a SEPTA bus stop in the Eagles post-game celebration.
I guess they didn’t realize that SEPTA bus stop roofs weren’t engineered to, you know, hold a mass of people on top of them. Pro tip: The roofs are really just meant to keep you dry when it’s raining.
6ABC landed a fun report with Ashley Marcial, one of the Eagles fans who crashed through the roof of the bus stop on Sunday night:
Wait … Did the reporter just say that the city told him that it could cost “tens of thousands of dollars” to replace one bus shelter roof?! Hey, it’s a Philly thing!
A local school district is calling for a two-hour delay the morning after the Super Bowl. I expect more will follow suit. Gotta give Eagles fans time to get out of urgent care after they crash through SEPTA bus shelter roofs, after all.
Here’s one SEPTA bus driver who most definitely deserves a raise.

Questions linger over the fate of the old headquarters for the Philadelphia Police Department. It’s an iconic structure with plenty of architectural value. But then there’s the troublesome history of the Philadelphia Police Department that it embodies.

A “Storybook house” on South Yale Street in Spring Garden Township, once a Hollywood dream, devolved into a nightmare as its whimsical wood shining roof that had endured for almost a century was playing out its final chapter.
Susan Machado and Ed O’Brien have begun a sequel for the house by rebuilding the roof that could last for another three quarters of a century with the help of one of only two roofing contractors in the United States who rebuild the complex wooden roofs as a full time business.
According to Brian Calamita of Roofing Artisans, who replaced the roof, the wavy wooden roofing creations, a hallmark of Storybook architecture, first began in Hollywood, California and spread throughout the United States from 1924 to 1932. Machado added that the Tudor-style house is reminiscent of the Cotswald cottages found in rural England.
Construction of the South Yale Street house started just before the Great Depression, which slowed down its building process as the economy failed. The house was completed in the early 1930s. The three-story home, a mixture of patterned brickwork, stucco and stone, was covered by its original wooden roof until it was replaced this past summer.
“The roof was toast…but it was 94 years old,” Calamita said. There were signs of water leaking into a second floor bathroom. A dormer on the roof had to be rebuilt. “The shingles were what was holding it together. When they took the shingles off the dormer it was just gone,” Machado said adding, “There was probably more damage than we thought.”
The secret of the red cedar roof’s longevity is in its layered redundancy. A long overlap of shingles (known as headlap) are layered to sculpt the roof creating multiple layers of shingles all over the roof. There is 150 percent more square foot of material used when compared to an asphalt shinele roof installation, Calamita said.
The new roof could last another 75 years if it’s kept treated, Calamita said.
The Canadian red cedar, which isn’t kiln dried, is considered an eco-friendly alternative to an asphalt roof that would need three replacements to match its durability with all the associated labor and fuel to move material, Calamita added. The old wooden roof was taken to the York County Resource Recovery Center where it was burned and turned into electricity. Multiple asphalt roofs would need to be taken to a landfill over the lifespan of one cedar roof.
More 1920s architecture:Tour completed Yorktowne Hotel in photos before it officially reopens
It took almost four months for the Roofing Artisans crew to replace the roof. There are about 10,000 steam-bent pieces all formed by hand. About 25 percent of the roof is steam-bent shingles. A boiling cauldron was set up in the garage where sets of shingles were custom bent and stacked for a planned section of the roof. Calamita said that he takes off a section of roof at a time and creates a template. The custom-made copper flashings and caps have their joints soldered.
From a distance, the roof looks like a thatched roof with soft curves around the hip rafters and bulges in the slope. The grand flourish of the design flows out of the eves of the roof where the shingles curve under the bottom horizontal edge.
Another special house:1750s farm sells in Hellam as children honor their mother’s dream
Calamita said that he is focused on the tradition of what these roofs are, a combination of design and function. He prides himself on the new shape of the separate entryway roof as “more of high design than what was there before.” The detached garage roof was also given a similar design to match the house.
“It’s truly custom, and that’s lost in our society today,” Calamita said adding. “I feel like I’m just old enough to have those values that my father and grandfather instilled in me … (my predecessors) weren’t just pictures hanging on a wall.” Calamita’s grandparents were immigrants from Italy.
Machado and O’Brien bought the house recently after living, restoring and remodeling other houses within blocks of the South Yale Street house. “None of the projects were meant to be a flip,” Machado said, adding, “It’s a love, not a business.” The couple plans on continuing to live in the Storybook house when restoration is completed.
“They are very expensive to maintain and very expensive to do back original. That’s a big challenge (for homeowners)”, Calamita said. A similar roof a few blocks away was replaced with asphalt a few years ago.
Expanding on the reason for replacing a roof that exceeded the value of a home that was “let go too long,” Machado explained that “it isn’t just remodeling a house, this house is different …it’s architecturally so significant that it needed to be saved…it’s trying to save something for the next generation. It was just too pretty to let go.”

The courthouse announced last week they are looking at replacing the existing roof, as signs of wear and leaks have been an ongoing issue.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The Buchanan County courthouse is set to undergo some pricey remodeling.
The courthouse announced last week they’re looking at replacing the existing roof as signs of wear and leaks have been an ongoing issue.
Presiding Commissioner Scott Nelson says although the maintenance sounds routine, it’s not that simple of a process.
“The big need is we’re going to replace the entire roof, and work on the dome. That’s because of leaks in the structure, we’ve got buckets up in the attic catching water and what not. It’s not as easy as it seems, because of the historical building status, so we have to get that ok’d through proper channels and things like that. Somebody asked me the other day and they said 1.3 million. We don’t know exactly but we’re told that’s going to be kind of the area. We hope it’s less that’d be great, but we have to plan for something,” Nelson says.
With the courthouse being a protected historical site, the building is still in the bid taking process for the roof repair.
As they hope to stay under the initial projected cost of $1.3 million.
]]>Perhaps the most visually memorable businesses on Fruitvale Boulevard have been housed in the peaked-roof buildings at the former intersection of the road with the Naches Highway.
When Fruitvale Boulevard continued west at that intersection, the corner was a natural spot for a gas station and hotel and those businesses were housed there, at 2402 Fruitvale Blvd., for decades. Among the more memorable names were the Peaked Roof Service Station and Swiss Motel.
A sketch of the former gas station provided by the properties’ current tenants, Energy Wellness Center owners Rob and Heidi Meinecke, was drawn by John G. “Chuck” Naasz, who grew up in Yakima and as a youth worked at businesses on or near Fruitvale Blvd
Naasz, who died in 2015, was a longtime art teacher at Eisenhower High School, retiring in 1992. According to his obituary, he was well-known in the Yakima Valley for his watercolors and pen and ink drawings, including one of the Peaked Roof Service Station and Swiss Motel.
His typed description of the Fruitvale Boulevard business said it was the Swiss Village Service Station, Peaked Roof Signal Station, the Signal Station and the Village Service Station before it became Holiday Haus at Swiss Village.
When the first building was erected in 1936, Naasz said it was a dairy lunch and delicatessen, serving ice cream and confectionary.
“This same year the ‘Swiss Village Inn’ was operated by Otto Braune,” he wrote. “In 1938, it was the Swiss Village Market.”
This pen-and-ink drawing by longtime Yakima art teacher and artist John G. “Chuck” Naasz shows the Peaked Roof Service Station at 2402 Fruitvale Blvd. The business was located at the intersection of Fruitvale Boulevard and US Highway 410.
In 1939 the service station opened and was operated by James H. Parmentier. It was listed as a gas station and the name painted on the front was Peaked Roof Service Station. It opened as a signal station. In 1942 it was listed as the Peaked Roof Service Station and Swiss Motel. In 1949 the buildings were owned by RH Siegele, who listed them as Swiss Village Motel and Swiss Village Service Station, Naasz wrote.
In 1951 it was operated by two people, one running the Village Motel and the other the Village Service Station. In 1954 and 1955 the name was again Peaked Roof Service Station and it was run by Joe Dobie. There is no service station listed after 1964.
“My personal interest in this service station goes back many years,” Naasz wrote. “While in high school I used to work down the street at the old Gerritsen’s Market. I used to work with Reinie Siegele who owned and operated the station and motel for many years. The first home I purchased in Yakima was down the street at North Ninth Avenue and Fruitvale. For two years I drove my 1934 Chevrolet sedan past the station when I worked at Naches.”
Naasz was an artist, photographer and car collector, and had a special interest in old service stations.
Rob Meinecke said the former gas station and hotel served for many years as the Village Shoppe vintage furniture store.
“We have people who remember that business well – in particular, it hosted a Christmas bazaar for many years,” he said. “The building itself is so unique. It just has lots of potential.”
The Meineckes, who opened their original Energy Wellness Center in the West Valley in 2017, have been renovating the interior of the main building at 2402 Fruitvale since April 2022. They began offering therapeutic massage, float therapy and other holistic services there Dec. 1.

Types of Roof Repair & Installation
The roof of your house is one of the most important structures – not only because it’s a critical part of your home’s protective system, but also because it plays an important role in your home’s heating and cooling systems. That’s why it’s important to keep it in good condition – by regularly repairing and installing new roofing, you can ensure that your home remains comfortable all year round. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the different types of roof repair and installation, as well as the costs and time required for each. Keep reading to learn more!
1. Types of roof repairs
There are a variety of roof repair and installation options available, depending on the damage and the type of roof.
1. a. Sheet roof repair
Sheet roofing is typically made from a single piece of material – so if it’s damaged, all that’s needed is for the damage to be fixed and the roof can be replaced as a whole.
There are two main types of sheet roof repair: seam and gutter replacement.
Seam replacement involves replacing the entire section of shingles that have failed – this can be done by either repairing or replacing them altogether.
Gutter replacement involves fixing leaky gutters, staining or painting fascia boards, re-flashing roofs where necessary, and re-installing roofing flashing.
b. Gable roof repair
Gable roofs consist of two or more gables – so if one gable is damaged, it can lead to water damage and structural problems in the roof as a whole.
The most common types of gable roof repair are fixing leaky gutters and replacing shingles.
Leaky gutters can be fixed with new fascia boards, new flashing, or replacement shingles. Shingles that have been saturated by rain or snow may need to be replaced as a whole – this is often a more cost-effective option.
c. Mansard roof repair
Mansard roofs have a flat roof – so if one gable is damaged, water can seep under the shingles and damage the framing underneath.
The most common type of mansard roof repair is replacing shingles. Shingles that are leaky or damaged in any other way may also need to be replaced – this is usually done as part of a larger renovation project on mansards.
2. Types of roof installations
A roof is one of the most important components of a home, and it’s important to keep it in good condition.
1. Traditional roofing
Traditionally, roofs are constructed with metal sheets that are nailed or screwed to the structure of the house.
Roofing can be a very cost-effective solution when it comes to repairs and replacement – it’s often much cheaper than other types of repair, and it doesn’t require any special skills or tools.
2. Roofing systems
Today there are a variety of roofing systems available on the market – so if you’re looking for something more specific, you can find that option here too.
Some common types of roof installation include shiny roofs, metal roofs, gutter roofs, and slate roofs. 3. Roofing repair and replacement services
If you’re worried that your roof needs repair or replacement, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional.
There are lots of options available when it comes to roofing repair and installation – so find the right one for your specific needs.
3. Cost of roof repair and installation
Roof repair and installation can cost a lot of money – especially if your roof needs repair or replacement. Before getting started on any roofing project, be sure to get an estimate. This will help you accurately calculate the costs of your project. Additionally, be sure to choose a contractor who is experienced with your type of roofing material and has the necessary tools and equipment. Certain repairs or materials may be more expensive than others, so it’s important to do your research before making a decision. And for a final tip, make sure to post roof repair and installation updates and pictures on social media so that your community is aware of your progress.
4. Time required for roof repair and installation
Roof repair and installation can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Many homeowners choose to repair their roof rather than replace it, but there are pros and cons to each approach. If you’re not sure whether or not roof repair is right for you, contact a qualified professional today! In the meantime, here are some key points to keep in mind when it comes to roof repair and installation:
5. Qualifications for roof repair and installation
Roof repair and installation is a risky business. That’s why it’s important to make sure that you have the right qualifications. To be able to do roof repair or installation, you need a license from your state. Additionally, roofers should have a good understanding of construction and the principles of roofing. They should also have experience repairing or installing roofs in different weather conditions. Finally, roofers should use safe methods when working on roofs, and always wear protective gear like gloves and safety glasses.
Conclusion
Roofing is one of the most common and important home repair projects. Not only is it important to keep your home roofing in good condition, but it’s also essential to have it repaired or replaced when necessary. In this blog, we’ve outlined the different types of roof repair and installation, as well as the costs and time required for each. If you need roof repair or installation, be sure to consult with a qualified contractor to get a cost-effective estimate. Thanks for reading!
