Cerra-Saunders sees wood kitchen cabinet doors surging in popularity. With a warm, natural look, this trend is sure to make the kitchen look even more inviting and cosy. “To avoid the bland look of the early 2000s, pick a wood species with a prominent grain such as walnut,” he advises. Walnut wood is a strong, versatile material that can add a sense of unique personality no matter how you choose to decorate, as is oak. “If going with an oak face, be sure that your door profile is clean and paired down to avoid looking stodgy,” Cerra-Saunders continues. As opposed to the glossy-coated repetitive look of faux wood finishes, designing your kitchen with the real deal has the ability to make your kitchen seem more lively.

If you like the veneer of wood but aren’t keen on the color, there are ways to work around it so it effortlessly fits into the theme of your room. “As for stain colors, avoid honey and reddish tones,” Cerra-Saunders suggests. “Think deep rich browns or ethereal whitewashes.”

Although the look of pure white kitchens is a fading trend, a whitewash brightens up the natural wood without diminishing the beauty of the grain. “Regarding door profiles, clean lines will still feel current,” Cerra-Saunders adds. “Go with a shaker or slab front, or iterations of. Avoid highly ornamental doors to keep your design fresh.”

Whether your kitchen looks dated and needs a quick overhaul whilst you save up for a new one, or you simply fancy a fresh makeover, the best paints for kitchen cabinets will completely transform the heart of the home quickly and easily – all for the price of a tin of paint!

But with so many different types of paints available on the market it can be tricky to know which ones are most suitable for your kitchen. Should you opt for an oil, enamel or water-based paint? Do you want a gloss, satin, matt or chalky finish? Never mind which color to go for! The options can seem endless.

That’s where the Ideal Home team is here to help with our round-up of the best paint for painting kitchen cabinets, from big name brands to affordable DIY store options. So read on for the lowdown on how to give your kitchen some budget wow factor!

And if you’re looking to paint furniture instead? Although the options can be similar, you’ll find the top options for upcycling in our guide to the best paint for furniture.

What color should I paint my kitchen cabinets?

Why you can trust Ideal Home

Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Do you want light and airy or dark and dramatic? Typically neutral tones, such as white and cream kitchen ideas, are good options, making any size of space feel bright and airy. But soft blues, greens and grays also work well for a more bespoke feel.

If you want something bold and striking then black and midnight blue can make a welcome statement, or you can combine two colors, such as light pink shades matched with contemporary gray tones. Always remember to try out testers before buying, as the color on the tin may look different once painted onto a surface.

What finish should I choose for my kitchen cupboards?

Once you decide on a colour, the next step is deciding which finish will best suit your kitchen cupboard goals, and these days there are a whole lot of paint finishes on offer! From chalk, matt and eggshell through to satin, semi-gloss and plain old gloss.

Matt or chalk paint finishes can create a more rustic feel that may work well in a country cottage kitchen, although a matt finish is generally harder to wipe down and less durable to chipping, so it can be a difficult choice to maintain in a high traffic kitchen. Matt paints are often water-based though, so you’re more likely to find an eco-friendly and low VOC option.

Satin, semi-gloss or gloss paints are a good choice for kitchen cabinets as they’re generally far easier to wipe down, more resistant to grease and cooking fumes, and less prone to chipping or scratching than their matt counterparts. However, these finishes tend to be solvent or oil-based, which can be tricky to paint with and are likely to contain more strong smelling and harmful chemicals.

Best paint for kitchen cabinets

1. Ronseal One Coat Cupboard & Melamine Paint White Satin 750ml

Best paint for kitchen cabinets overall

cupboard paint can with white background

Finish: Satin and gloss
Base type: Solvent
Capacity: 750ml
colour: 9

Reasons to buy:

  • No primer needed
  • Smooth finish
  • One coat

Reasons to avoid:

  • Long drying time
  • Contains VOCs
  • No matte finish option
  • Limited color options

If you’re after an instant update for your melamine or MDF kitchen cabinets, the Ronseal One Coat Cupboard & Melamine Paint is ideal. This paint is specifically formulated for melamine cupboards, and easy to apply with a brush in just one coat. But if you are painting over a strong color with a lighter hue, you may need two coats to achieve that smooth finish.

In addition, it’s advisable to allow 12-24 hours drying time between coats. This may seem rather long for some, but the results are well worth the wait! What’s more, it’s tough, durable and scuff resistant, making it great for busy households.

The downside is that this is a solvent-based paint, meaning it contains VOC chemicals and has a fairly strong smell. Ensure to open windows to get sufficient ventilation and avoid using it in enclosed spaces.

We opted for the satin finish – although there is a gloss option too – and overall we found this the best paint to revamp either melamine or wood kitchen cabinets, giving a smooth finish and producing great results.

Ideal Home rating: 5 out of 5 stars

2. B&Q GoodHome Durable Matt Cabinet & Wardrobe Paint 750ml

Best matt paint for kitchen cupboards

paint can with matt finish white background

Finish: Frosted
Base type: Water
Capacity: 750ml
colour: 10

Reasons to buy:

  • Great price
  • No primer needed
  • washable

Reasons to avoid:

Although easily cleanable satin or gloss paints are generally recommended for kitchen cabinets, this durable matt paint has been formulated to be hard-wearing and water-resistant to daily splashes, spillages, and even household cleaners. So you can still keep it clean and wipe off marks easily whilst enjoying a flat matt finish.

The water-based formula also makes this easier to work with than a solvent or oil-based paint, and reduces the strong smell – although it’s always advisable to ensure good ventilation of any painting area.

And best of all, it’s super affordable, offering great value and a good selection of color choices to aid you in your kitchen transformation.

Ideal Home rating: 5 out of 5 stars

3. Frenchic Furniture Paint The Lazy Range 750ml

Best chalk kitchen cabinet paint

white furniture paint can with white background

Finish: chalk
Base type: Water
Capacity: 750ml, 250ml, 150ml
colour: 15

Reasons to buy:

  • Low toxins and VOC’s
  • Self priming
  • Good coverage

Reasons to avoid:

  • Will only suit certain kitchen styles

If you’re after shabby chic decorating ideas then Frenchic Furniture paint will give you an excellent chalky finish. You don’t need a primer and with its smooth and creamy texture, it gives great coverage, although you will need a few coats.

This chalk paint has a thick formula so is self-levelling – meaning no unsightly brush marks – and water-resistant, which makes it the perfect choice for revamping your kitchen cabinets.

Best of all, this is an all-natural, chalk and mineral paint that is odorless and contains no nasty toxins, and it comes in 15 color options.

Ideal Home rating: 5 out of 5 stars

4. Wilko Quick Dry Cupboard & Furniture Paint 750ml

Best value paint for kitchen cupboards

wilko cupboard paint with white background

  • Finish: Satin and chalk
    Base type: Oil
    Capacity: 750ml, 2.5 liters
    colour: 9

Reasons to buy:

  • Great price
  • One hour drying time
  • Smooth satin finish

Reasons to avoid:

  • Strong smell
  • No gloss finish option
  • Limited color options

If you’re after an easy to use, quick-drying paint on a small budget then the Wilko Quick Dry Cupboard and Furniture paint will do a grand job. And best of all, it comes at a very affordable price point of £10! Ideal for students on a budget or first-time buyers who want to uplift their kitchen cabinets without splashing out.

It’s specifically formulated to give a tough, smooth satin finish for melamine, interior wood, MDF cupboards, which makes it a good choice to touch up your kitchen cabinets and drawers, and it’s also available in a chalk finish option.

The paint gives excellent coverage and a little goes a long way, but you may need one or two coats to get perfect results. It’s also quick drying to the touch in just two hours, although we’d recommend waiting a little longer before applying another coat.

The downside is we found this oil-based paint had a strong odor, so you’ll definitely need to open the windows!

Ideal Home rating: 4 out of 5 stars

5. Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint

Best kitchen cabinet paint with a wide color range

cupboard paint with paint can

  • Finish: Frosted
    Base type: Water
    Capacity: 750ml
    colour: 110

Reasons to buy:

  • No primer or top coat needed
  • Wide range of colours
  • washable
  • One hour drying time

Reasons to avoid:

For a self-priming, stain-resistant paint that comes in a HUGE selection of colors Rust-Oleum Kitchen Cupboard Paint is a great option.

Although a gloss or semi-gloss finish for kitchen cabinets is generally recommended, this ultra-flat matt finish offers a good alternative if your adverse to a sheen, and the water-based formula is easier to work with than an oil or solvent-based option.

Designed especially for kitchens, it’s washable, making it easy to wipe away splashes or splatters over time and delivers a smooth coverage in just one or two coats. But best of all, the fact is there’s no need to compromise on your creative vision with those 110 color options to choose from.

Even though a primer or topcoat isn’t needed, you might still want to prime where you see stain bleed or knots in the underlying wood, or if you’re painting over a very dark surface with a light colored paint.

Ideal Homes rating: 4 out of 5 stars

How do I prepare my kitchen cabinets for painting?

While it’s easy to get excited about getting your brush out and getting some color on your cupboards, it will definitely pay off to put in some prep work beforehand (sorry!). For the full how-to make sure to check out our guide to how to paint kitchen cabinets, but we’ve broken down the basics below:

  • First, remove any handles or knobs from the cabinets and drawers, so you’ll have a clear surface to work on.
  • Clean all the surfaces you plan to paint thoroughly with a good degreasing detergent or all-purpose cleaner. This is important for removing the kitchen grease and grime build-up over time.
  • Next up, lightly sand or ‘key’ the surfaces to help the paint grip. It’s advisable to use a fine grit paper – 150-250 grit, and lightly sand to create an even, matt surface.
  • Once finished, make sure to wipe the dust off with a damp cloth and let surfaces dry completely.
  • Protect the worktops and floors from splatter with a dust-proof sheet and run masking tape along the cabinet edges to prevent paint from getting on the walls.

Now you’re all set to get out the paint and give your kitchen cupboards a makeover!

Do I need a primer to paint kitchen cupboards?

The answer that nobody wants is yes, probably! Primers create a base coat for the paint and will help to prevent blemishes or knots in the wood from showing through and make paint more resistant to chipping off. Many specialist cupboard paints are self-priming and suitable for use directly on wood, melamine and acrylic cabinets, but if you want the best possible results, it will probably still pay off to use a primer first.

Once you have prepped your cabinets, add the first coat of primer with a roller. If your cabinet surface is quite glossy though, you may need another coat as the multiple layers will build up added hardness.

Former minister Konrad Mizzi has insisted he was not part of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s ‘kitchen cabinet’.

“I have no knowledge of this kitchen cabinet, and I can tell you I was not part of anything of the sorts,” Mizzi testified during the Public Accounts Committee.

In 2020, former finance minister Edward Scicluna had spoken of a “kitchen cabinet” of advisors to Muscat, who made decisions and gave the go-ahead on certain controversial projects during his testimony in the public inquiry on Daphne Caruana Galizia.

During a later PAC testimony, Scicluna had played down his comments, such ‘kitchen cabinets’ exist in every government.

Konrad Mizzi was being questioned by PAC chair Darren Carabott on the bank guarantee the government gave to help Electrogas secure financing until the European Commission cleared the security of supply agreement.

On the increase of the guarantee from €110 million to €450 million, Mizzi said it was approved by the whole cabinet of ministers, saying it was needed for the project to go through.

PAC chair and PN MP Darren Carabott said reports by the auditor general show the decision to go ahead with the power station project was taken on 10 October 2013 and was announced on 12 October 2013.

Asked when and how he was informed Electrogas had won the bid for the project, Mizzi said he did not remember, insisting the Labor administration at the time had the electoral mandate to lower energy bills, and the power station process had to be quick.

Questioned by the police

The former minister dodged questioning on whether he was interrogated by the police about his ties to the Electrogas consortium.

Asked by Carabott and PN MP David Agius if he had ever been questioned by the police, Mizzi did not answer.

Pressed further, he said “he had nothing further to add”.

Yorgen Fenech discussions on Electrogas

The former minister was asked if he had ever spoken to alleged Daphne Caruana Galizia murder mastermind Yorgen Fenech on matters related to Electrogas.

“Did you speak every word to Fenech on liquidated damages and excise tax?” Opposition PAC members asked Mizzi.

“I don’t recall,” answered Mizzi. “Whenever an Electrogas director came to me, I always referred them to the negotiating team.”

Carabott cited a Times of Malta article on confidential documents concerning major projects under Mizzi’s ministerial control were leaked to Fenech.

When asked if Mizzi was messaging Fenech telling him to “delete his Whatsapp” messages on Electrogas, Mizzi replied by saying the question had nothing to do with the power station deal, and refused to answer.

He said he did not remember if Fenech had spoken about the liquidated damages on the project and that he only knew that Fenech was the CEO of Tumas Group at the time.

Mizzi also said he was not aware that Fenech was one of the owners of Electrogas shareholders New Energy Supply Limited.

“When Yorgen spoke to me on technical matters, I would refer him to the negotiating team,” he said.

Mizzi’s lawyer Carol Peralta, and government PAC members found issued with Carabott’s line of questioning, saying it was not in line with the committee’s objectives.

Decision to go for an offshore system

Mizzi was also asked why the government had insisted on an offshore system, when it was established by the auditor general there were questionable assessments on the decision.

“Studies showed the off shore solution was the best one,” Mizzi said. When asked why the auditor general had not received the studies when carrying out his investigation, the former minister said he did not know.

Mizzi was asked by Agius how he felt on the lack of an unanimous decision by the Enemalta board on Electrogas. “Did it bother you?”

He replied by saying the decision on the contract was not his, and said he was not sure if he knew if Lara Boffa was on the board. Boffa had voted against.

Agius said there was an 11 October 2013 meeting at Castille before the decision was taken, where the chosen company had declared, a day before the Enemalta board had made its decision, who had won the project contract.

Mizzi passed the buck to the Program Review Board, saying the PAC had to question them on that declaration. “The presentation was made in front of you!” Agius remarked.

Asked on the connection between the power station project, and the Montenegro project, Mizzi said there was none.

Best Braiser: Martha By Martha Stewart Enameled Cast Iron Collection Enameled Cast Iron 3.5 Quart Braiser With Lid

Depending on your point of view, a braiser is basically a shorter Dutch oven or a taller enameled cast-iron skillet with a lid. Either way, this one is ultra-useful for Thanksgiving cooking and for serving, since it’s so pretty. We chose the Cobblestone color for the braiser because it’s quintessential Martha—and an instant collectible.

Use it for vegetable sides you make on the stovetop, like Brown-Sugar-and-Bacon-Glazed Brussels Sprouts, which braise in chicken stock. Cook the bacon for this side in the braiser first, rather than using another pan.

Whether you’re a pro or a newbie in the kitchen, there are some parts of cooking that just get tiring. Doing prep work is nobody’s favorite chore and when you’re cooking after work or for your family some well-deserved hacks are sorely needed. Thanks to modern technology, there are plenty of handy little gadgets that you can add to your kitchen arsenal that will take the stress and strain out of everyday cooking.

A simple pull mechanism and no electronic parts make a mechanical food chopper one of the most useful items to have around. Of course, it wouldn’t be as neat as hand-prepped veggies but if you’re cooking at home, speed always beats looks.

KOCHI: For many people, the kitchen is the sanctum zone of a house. And, of late, it is given royal privilege during designing or renovation.

Just like interior designing of living spaces, there is a wide range of upgrades that one can do to make the kitchen look more modern and appealing. From the wall colors to the striking cabinets, kitchen trends have undergone a sea change. TNIE takes a look at some of the top kitchen trends for the year.

Let there be light
The lighting in one’s kitchen can completely transform the look and feel of the space. From ornamental pendants to track lighting, there are multiple options for kitchen light fixtures. Recessed lights are the most popular choices. Under-cabinet lighting, too, has been trending. The more the merrier, they say

Flat panel doors
Though minimal kitchen cabinet doors have been the norm, flat-panel cabinets, aka slab cabinets, are now gaining popularity. Time to move beyond the boring cupboards, they say.

Right blend of wall shades
Often, kitchens are painted ‘neutral’ to match the tiles, appliances and cabinets. However, many interior experts suggest that it need not be the case. To spruce up your kitchen, nature-inspired and soothing colors can also be used. Emerging color choices include emerald green and lilac (lavender). Helps destress as one cook, they say.

Open layouts
From crowded and micro-layout kitchens, people are increasingly opting for open kitchens these days. More homeowners are designing their kitchens with enhanced access to living spaces, when compared with earlier days. Separation walls are disappearing, thereby connecting the kitchen to the living and dining area, and creating a lot of airy space for movement. Break the barriers, they say.

Cabinet colours
The choice of cabinet colors is an ever-revolving trend. While white cabinets remain the most popular choice, natural wood-tone is the in-thing of the season. Plywood, meanwhile, is emerging as the top choice for cabinetry works. Woody is classy, they say.

Ant-Man star Evangeline Lilly has shared a glimpse into the most practical room of her home – but in all its functionality, the space is beautifully intimate.

The Canadian-born actress, known for her part in the previously mentioned movie franchise, alongside The Hobbit and South of Heaven, shared a photo at her sink, surrounded by ‘beautiful smelling soap’ that – she says – makes her feel blessed.

‘I feel so lucky to be able to stand at a sink with running, warm water, and beautiful smelling soap, and wash my dishes and let my mind wander,’ Evangeline says. Her post celebrates distinct kitchen ideas that make this practical space feel more intimate.

Alongside the soap, the post (below) exhibits more ways to add a sense of personality to your kitchen – whether through plants (we counted four in the snapshot alone) or cookbooks that deserve an eternal place on the kitchen countertop.

There is a lot to admire in Evangeline Lilly’s kitchen, beginning with her little quirks that make the space her own. And our design notes don’t end with her eclectic candles and greenery.

If you’re looking for kitchen storage ideas, you may have heard that open-shelving debate – with some designers warning that this trendy solution can be hard to maintain. However, it has hard to make a case against open shelving when you see Evangeline Lilly’s setup. On her shelves, the actress continues to showcase her individuality through a series of painted jugs and bowls that almost ‘float’ above her glossy cream countertops. And if you’re inevitably feeling inspired, you’re in good company.

Peter Erlandsson, the director of String Furniture (opens in new tab)praises the art of open shelving – suggesting that Evangeline’s decorating ideas are ‘beautiful and decorative’ without impacting your kitchen’s functionality.

‘Treat your shelf like a canvas, and create a work of art on top of it with artfully styled ‘clutter,” the Swedish designer says. Plus, beyond its aesthetic qualities, Peter suggests this solution is an impactful way to create the illusion of space in a small kitchen, too.

‘Not only is it fun to create your own organic and changing artwork from your own nick-nacks, but it is a great way to save space. When you lift things off the floor and use shelving as a storage solution, you create the illusion of a larger space,’ he says.

With approval from those in Hollywood and the design industry, it’s certainly hard to ignore this enduring kitchen feature.

Centering the kitchen at the center of an open-concept space can create a coherent look across your home – especially if you align your farmhouse kitchen ideas with the decor in the adjacent room. Open-plan kitchen ideas also bring a relaxed aesthetic that suits today’s homes and lifestyle.

‘In this project, rethinking the modern farmhouse style was about getting away from the trendy, expected black and oak look,’ explain Lina Galvao and Erin Coren from Curated Nest Interiors.

‘The colors in the family room – black, cream, and blue, with natural wood accents – prove to be more vibrant than in your typical farmhouse, but don’t assault the senses. This works particularly well in the home’s open-plan setting, where a “light and airy” feeling is emphasized throughout the ground floor space with the repeated use of pale greys, whites, and light woods.

For years, all-white kitchens have been a top trend for home interiors. Yet, even as white has withstood the test of time, plenty of homeowners have preferred to increase the interest in their kitchens, which paved the way for cabinetry in vibrant colors. Some designers entered the trend with muted blues with a feel similar to neutrals, but as colored cabinets became more popular, people became bolder with their choices. Shades of green, yellows, and even reds were soon featured in the kitchen.

Colored kitchen cabinets are a trend like any other and, as we all know, trends come and go. They initially rise until they reach their peak and can be found everywhere, then inevitably decline before either coming back for another round or fading into obsolescence. According to Design Pool, trends in residential interiors move a little slower than trends in fashion, so larger home fads like brightly hued cabinets can stay in style for years. But is their moment in the spotlight about to expire? In an exclusive interview with House Digest, Cinque Cerra-Saunders, interior designer and host of A&E’s tiny dwelling show “Living Smaller,” says vivid statements may be on the decline, but, if you love color, don’t give up hope just yet. “While the painted kitchen cabinet trend will slowly fizzle out in 2023, not all colors are alike,” she explains.

Some classics never go out of style

Colored kitchen cabinets may be losing some popularity, but this doesn’t necessarily signal a return to wood tones. “White painted cabinets will remain a classic baseline,” Cinque Cerra-Saunders says. “You can’t go wrong with white cabinets; they are a blank canvas and iterations can be found in homes throughout the decades from the time the kitchen cabinet was invented.” Painting your kitchen cabinets white ensures that your kitchen will remain timeless, which allows you to engage in some of the less obtrusive trends to add splashes of color or personality elsewhere without needing a major renovation.

White is also versatile. “The white cabinet door will continue to work in a variety of style genres and edge profiles,” Cerra-Sanders explains. “They will also be a great option for long-term investment properties where updates happen less frequently.” With a variety of white shades, you can find the ideal hue for your style and space. Creamy whites add warmth to a cold kitchen, while crisp whites give the room a fresh and clean feel.

Black cabinets will also be an option

For some homeowners, white can seem like a base that feels too strong. Luckily, it’s not the only option for colored cabinets. Black is on the rise for many kitchens, but Cinque Cerra-Saunders has a warning for those who intend to use this dark shade. “Black cabinets, though stunning, are less universal and best executed in slab-front styles in homes with modern or contemporary aesthetics.” If you’re aiming for an overall design concept that feels sleek and chic, this could be the way to go.

The dark and moody aesthetic is currently on-trend, but Cerra-Saunders believes black cabinets can also create a kitchen that will look stylish for years to come. “I think they are a great way to be bold yet timeless, without being too directional. In the right setting, you still can’t go wrong with a black cabinet,” she adds. To get that perfect shade of black, you have to consider the undertones. Depending on your lighting options, a true black may be too dark for your space, but a tone that is slightly cool or a little warm might feel just right.
