Air conditioning installed in Carl Ray Johnson, South Side Recreation Centers

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Ward members gathered Monday night to celebrate the grand reopening of the Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center.

The Carl Ray Johnson and South Side Leisure Centers are now air-conditioned. According to City Recreation Manager Brent Casey, the renovations cost around $ 89,000 and came from grants and money saved from the City For Recreation fund in 2019.

“This building [Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center] has been here for nearly 50 years so it’s long gone having air conditioning here, ”said Casey. “It will open up a world of possibilities.”

San Angelo residents pressed for air conditioning to be installed after an emergency last summer.

“We had to get someone out and they had to seek emergency help because it was just too warm,” Casey said. “It was one of the really hot days, around 110 degrees, so we started pushing other avenues and some of the citizens started pushing for air conditioners.”

The air conditioning of the two recreation centers comes just in time as the recreational sports leagues began today as part of the second phase of Governor Greg Abbott’s reopening plan.

“I grew up with sports and it’s still one of the things I think about the most in my life,” said San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter. “I cherish these moments, so I know that this facility can create these memories for these families and these children. It is a good thing. It’s a positive thing. “
