A window to the success of the Power Home Remodeling Group

For many sales-oriented companies, competition hinders the creation of a friendly and supportive work environment. But not with the Power Home Remodeling Group, where employees say supportive colleagues and generously Perks make it one of the best midsize companies to work for in the greater Houston area.

Before COVID-19 hit, Power’s employees were selling door-to-door. They held large group meetings on a regular basis and even took an annual company-sponsored vacation to Mexico to celebrate their achievements. Nowadays, they keep everyone in a good mood and community with Zoom calls and regular check-ins to ensure employees are safe, said Joshua Shepard, vice president of sales at Power’s Houston office.

“Everyone cheers one another, everyone gets excited when someone succeeds and isn’t upset that this should be my client,” Shepard said.

Power, a national company with headquarters in 16 states, has 154 employees in Houston and 2,700 nationwide. The company, which was founded in 1992, was ranked second among medium-sized companies in the Houston Chronicles Top Workplaces survey and received the “Doers” award for efficient and good work.

When the pandemic broke out, Power was shut down for the last two weeks of March but continued to pay its employees. When it was forced to take all but 300 employees off, the company continued to cover its health benefits.

Employees returned to work on July 1, as did Houston homeowners who had stared at the four walls of their homes for too long, picked up their phones and asked about renovations. July was the busiest month of the year for the company.

“We closed when we had to,” said Shepard, “and then came back with a vengeance and a complete plan to make sure people get their money back as soon as possible.”

Usually Power brings its employees and a plus to Mexico every year, but that doesn’t happen in 2020. However, the company still offers one important advantage: a steady job in the face of a recession.
