5 ways to spice up your kitchen cabinets

If you’re looking for affordable ways to upgrade the look of your existing kitchen, the easiest way to do it is to update the look of the kitchen cabinets. Here are some simple and practical design tips that can help you transform the aesthetics of this very important space.

1. Replace the kitchen cabinets

If the kitchen cabinets are stained, scratched, or chipped, you’ll need to redesign the top finish. It is advisable to carefully inspect the cabinets and only go to work with the existing cabinets if the basic structure of the kitchen is made of good quality plywood. It is not advisable to reapply MDF or chipboard units. The cabinets can be updated by painting the existing units with wood paint, adding a new layer of laminate, or installing new doors.

Tip: Use a two-tone color scheme in paint or laminate to give the kitchen a visually appealing look. It is advisable to use dark colors for the base units as these tend to be stained, and to use lighter tones for the upper units.

2. Insert glass inserts

Opt for transparent, etched, frosted or stained glass panes. The best part about using glass is that it brings in an element of lightness and gives the kitchen an airy look. Introduce the cabinet lighting and use it to display dishes and other kitchen accessories.

3. Buy new buttons and pulls

Replace the old and rusty knobs and pulls of the kitchen with trendy and designer hardware that comes in brushed and polished finishes of chrome, SS (stainless steel), nickel, brass and bronze. This is one of the fastest, most affordable ways to update the look of the kitchen. Make sure that the new buttons and pulls are sized to match the existing buttons so that no additional holes have to be drilled.

4. Install the lighting under the cabinet

The ceiling lights, pendant lights and wall units can cast shadows on the kitchen countertop. Therefore, it is advisable to illuminate the kitchen with lighting under the cabinet by installing LED fairy lights at the base of the ceiling units. It provides focused lighting on the kitchen countertop that is ideal for food preparation and cooking. You can also introduce soft lighting and bring a feeling of lightness to the kitchen by installing LED downlights on the ledge of the sub-units or between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling.

5. Add crown shape

Add a decorative look to the kitchen by inserting crown moldings on top of the kitchen units or where they join.
