3D-printed concrete houses in Mexico are fighting poverty

It’s called the 4th industrial revolution – the practical application of digital technology in the physical world.

And there is no better example than this new social housing project with 3D printed concrete houses each built in just 24 hours.

New Story, a nonprofit pioneering housing solutions for the homeless, launched the first 3D printed shared apartment last week in Tasbasco, Mexico.

The resilient, 46.5 square meter houses were 3D printed by Icon, a construction technology company, in several days in around 24 hours of printing time. The final construction is from Échale, New Story’s nonprofit partner in Mexico.

The organization says there will be 50 homes in the community given to local families currently living in extreme poverty and makeshift, insecure housing.

Each house has two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. And they were designed along with feedback from the families who will live in them so that they were created to meet the specific needs of the community.

Because the area is within a seismic zone, the homes were constructed beyond standard safety requirements and have sturdy foundations to ensure they will last for generations.

The families who will live in the houses have been preselected and will move in when the fellowship is over.

“The families selected have the greatest financial and physical needs,” says a spokesman. “In this community, the median monthly family income is $ 76.50 (NZD 116), so they are among the lowest-income families in Mexico overall.

“In the survey, 74 percent of families said that they do not feel safe in their current living conditions and that this severely affects their quality of life.”

New Story partnered with local government officials to conduct the survey of more than 500 families in the area. The majority of families come from an indigenous population that has historically been excluded from government programs.

While Icon’s household 3D printer, the Vulcan II, is designed to work under the constraints common in rural areas, the journey for this project has not been easy, according to New Story.

The company says power supplies can be unpredictable and local rains have often flooded the access roads to the construction site.

Icon was founded in Austin, Texas by Alex Le Roux, Evan Loomis and Jason Ballard. Launched in March, the Vulcan II printer, designed to address the housing shortage for vulnerable populations, is the first of its kind.
